Programme

Hosted by the Canada Council for the Arts, the first World Summit brought together 300 delegates and observers to discuss issues ranging from promoting cultural diversity to protecting artists’ intellectual property rights in the age of new technology.

Programme Participants

The 1st World Summit included keynote sessions with:

A keynote address from Doreen Nteta (South Africa), the first Chief Executive Officer of the National Arts Council of South Africa presented observations about the life of an arts council in a developing nation. Ms Nteta praised the government of Nelson Mandela for placing the arts and culture at the centre of democratic development and national redress and reconciliation.

A keynote address from writer Antonine Maillet (Canada) who spoke about the role of artists in society and her personal decision to become an artist.

Christophe Blandin-Estournet (France), Director of Programming at the Grande Halle de la Villette in Paris, delivered a keynote speech on the support of creativity in contemporary society in an increasingly globalised environment that offers great promise and potential dangers.

A keynote address by Ann Medina (Canada), journalist, international correspondent, broadcasting executive, filmmaker and producer focussed on future cooperation among national arts councils and funding bodies for the benefit of artists and cultures. Ms Medina summarised the major directions that had emerged over the three days.
